NANATEN'S RANDOM REVIEW

Kyoko Okitegami's Memo

I once said that I'll be doing reviews (Because I can. Got a problem with that?).

Okitegami Kyōko no Bibōroku (Kyoko Okitegami's Memo)

Story: NisiOisin (Monogatari Series, Medaka Box)
Art: Yo Asami (MaoYuu Maou Yuusha)

Published in: Kodansha's Monthly Shounen Magazine

Synopsis:

A detective named Kyōko Okitegami who is also known as the forgetful detective. She forgets everything in a day, but solves cases the same day. (Her name has the Japanese word for "today" in it.) An unlucky young man named Yakusuke Kakushidate somehow ends up as the suspect in every case, and he always asks for the detective. (source: ANN)

It is the mixture of Fifty First Date and live action version of Antiquarian Bookshop Biblia's Case File. On the first chapter, we were shown that Yakusuke has known Kyoko for at least two years, but because of her condition, she always greets him formally (shown by a stack of Kyoko's name card on Yakusuke's drawer). But by the end of the chapter, it is shown that she was tring to remember him by putting on her titular memo.

As for the titular memo, it was a note drawn in many parts of her body. It contains her personal information and identity as detective. The scene where Kyoko checked her body looking for notes is a part of this series' fan service.

Considering it's still the first chapter, the case itself is simple, especially the big reveal. Someone has stolen an important data from Yakusuke's workplace. There're five suspects, including Yakusuke with him being the prime for only working for two months. The way Kyoko lured the culprit is too simple, but the event leading up to it is what makes the chapter exciting. Just before Kyoko can reveal the culprit, someone put a sedative on Kyoko's coffee causing her to sleep and resets her memory. That itself makes what this manga so unique.

For the characters, the chemistry between Yakusuke and Kyoko feels a little bland considering that Yakusuke has known her for two years. It feels like it really is the first time they've met but with the exposition provided by Yakusuke to inform the reader about her condition. But by the end of the chapter it is shown that they're starting a friendly relationship. Maybe on next chapter we'll see their relationship developt or reset yet again. I'm expecting a flashback showing their first meeting.

In overall, it's a light detective story. It's not too complicated, but still exciting. Just have to wait till October for second chapter and the live action version (also fist chapter of Shura no Toki: Showa Era Arc. Let's not forget the real reason why I get the magazine in the first place!).

Unfortunately, I don't know how to rate a manga. I just hope that some would scanlate this.

So leave your comments below! (Hopefully I could finish Fudekage in time. Only 20 pages to go!)
